Adam Ray is a Seattle native who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California. He has performed in his persona as “Dr. Phil” since 2023. He joined YouTube under the name “adamraycomedy” and has over 37 million views among his 360,000 subscribers. He is also a voice artist who has worked in advertisements for Burger King, the San Diego Zoo Zebra Exhibit, and more.
The highlight of his career appears to be his impersonation of “Dr. Phil,” which he performs in full makeup and prosthetics. The character is based on Dr. Phil McGraw, the clinical psychologist who has become the host of his own television show, which is billed as an advice program.
Ray was playing a McGraw-like character for a comedy show, and got so much positive feedback he decided to develop the idea fully, coming up with a:
“. . . late-night version of a daytime guy.”
In 2023, Ray started producing shows monthly at Los Angeles’ Comedy Store. During these skits, his version of “Dr. Phil” interacted with others, and the results were uploaded to YouTube. Ray’s work was noticed by Dr. Phil himself, who endorsed the impersonation.
