San Clemente remembers big band era

San Clemente’s Rotary Club will be presenting is annual USO/Swing Night in June.

It will be an evening of music from the Big Band era and swing dancing. Net proceeds will benefit local scholarships and charities.

The evening will begin with a Cocktail Hour followed by dinner. Dancing to live music from Pete Jacobs Wartime Radio Revue will round out the evening.

The band will be playing classics from swing legends such as Benny Goodman (Bugle Call, Sing, Sing, Sing and Goody, Goody), Artie Shaw (Begin the Beguine, Deep Purple, Moonglow and Stardust), and Tommy Dorsey (I’ll be Seeing You, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You and The Music Goes Round and Round). The Andrew Sisters will be remembered for their Beer Barrel Polka, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.

Count Basie’s classics such as Honeysuckle Rose, One O’Clock Jump, and Oh, Lady Be Good will be a highlight of the evening. The night will not be complete without Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and A String of Pearls.

Guests are encouraged to wear ‘40s attire and WWII uniforms. Pictures taken during the evening could be used for personalized Stationery and possible poster printing.

The event will be held Saturday, June 10 from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm at the San Clemente Community Center, 100 North Calle Seville at Avenida del Mar, San Clemente.
