The 47th Annual Festival of Whales is coming to Dana Point for four days in early March.
Somewhere in the region of 40 to 50 whales go by Dana Point daily, as California gray whales make their 5,000-mile migration from Alaska to Mexico.
The event will feature classes, art displays, a carnival, sand-sculpting competitions, classic cars, fishing clinics and walking tours, along with whale watching from both land and boat.
Boat excursions will run for two hours and certified naturalists and expert captains narrate each trip. The early morning excursions will be the cheapest, and the 4:00 pm Sunset Whale Watch will be a little more expensive. Passengers can get a close-up view of the whales and dolphins on the catamarans. San Clemente guests can opt for Tallship sailing adventures.
The first day will include a parade, street fair, art lessons, a Marine Mammal Lecture series, pizza and the Harbor Music Series. The second day will have a pancake breakfast, paint class, paddling clinic, a diamond dig, a BBQ, and the Rubber Ducky Derby. There will also be a Dinghy Dash and the 7th Annual Clam Chowder Cook off. The final day will have an art show, a concert, and a ‘Sonic Sea’ movie screening.
