Over the years, thousands of people flocked to San Clemente to check out the world's best surfers competing with each other. The world's best surfers also created a lot of excitement in San Clemente by attending events at neighborhood pubs and restaurants where autograph signings and movie premieres took place. Together with the World Surf League, the city organized an annual news conference on San Clemente's wooden pier, featuring a "Walk of Champions" with the names of previous world champions going all the way back to the mid-1970s. Last year, the city and the Downtown Business Association collaborated on a kick-off ceremony and autograph signing event at the community center.
When asked about the fact that the finals would be moving, San Clemente Council member Chris Duncan commented to say:
“This was expected, we knew going in this was the last year of the agreement and that there were other locations that might be in the running. We will take this as a challenge and make this the best Final 5 ever.”
The Lexus WSL Finals will be held in San Clemente for the final time on September 6-14 at Lower Trestles.
