South County residents were encouraged to take part in a public brainstorming session where they were able to discuss any environmental issues brought up by the prospective development of the nearby Prima Deshecha Landfill.
The greatest daily volume the landfill can accept has been increased by the OCWR from 4,000 TPD to 8,000 TPD. A subsequent environmental impact report which addresses the 2001 General Development Plan for Prima Deshecha is currently being prepared by the government.
A project known as "Increase in Maximum Daily Operations" would increase the volume of waste dumped at the landfill. The landfill is located in one of Orange County's unincorporated areas between the cities of San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. as well as the number of days each year when the permitted maximum TPD may be exceeded. The "Zone 4 Phase A Mass Excavation and Liner Project", a related project at Prima Deshecha, received a contract worth $88 million from the County Board of Supervisors at their meeting in September. The scope of the project includes various infrastructure projects in addition to the removal of five million cubic meters of ground and the creation of 9 million cubic meters of landfill space.
The Administrative Building for Prima Deshecha served as the venue for the October meeting.
