The city council in San Clemente has voted in favor of several changes to local ordinances in order to make the city’s municipal code compliant with state law.
The changes will also help with the implementation of the Housing Element project. The council passed six ordinances that could be approved in one voting session. The ordinance's main changes were related to the density bonus law, accessory dwelling units, residential care facilities, and permanent supportive housing. Brochure printing could be used to show how certain changes have been made in cases like this.
San Clemente’s Housing Element features Blueprints for how the city will accommodate the state's rise in housing demand. The plan was approved in October by California’s Housing and Community Development. The city needed to update its laws in order to implement the Housing Element.
The Density Bonus Ordinance had to be updated to match Assembly Bill 1763. The municipal code was also changed to make a reference to California’s Density Bonus Law so that it will still be relevant if the State decides to make changes to the law in the future.
With the new changes, the city will be required to provide information on how an applicant can improve their applications if they are originally denied. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are now able to reach a maximum height of 18 feet.
