The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce announced a comprehensive program to assist local restaurants in meeting California's state recycling requirements.
Under Senate Bill 1383, passed in 2016, the state's organic waste disposal must be reduced by 75% by 2025. The bill also states that jurisdictions will be tasked with conducting organic recycling education and outreach, as mandated by CalRecycle. WM, a provider of sustainability and waste solutions, referred to the legislation as the most significant mandate for the reduction of landfill waste recently adopted in California.
Representatives from the Chamber and member restaurants visited CR&R's organic waste digester, colloquially referred to as an "organic waste-eating machine."
As per the Chamber's announcement, the group received a first-hand demonstration of how the digester transforms food and green waste into the most environmentally friendly transportation fuel available. Participants were educated about the process required to adhere to current recycling regulations aimed at promoting a more sustainable community. Printing services can be used to produce educational pamphlets.
On May 31, CR&R executives will provide a presentation to Chamber members, city leadership, and other stakeholders on how the San Clemente community can endorse and execute food waste recycling regulations.
The program's final phase entails the Chamber's establishment of a "Sustainable Leader" accolade for businesses dedicated to conforming with SB 1383 and educating their patrons. The Chamber's website, SCChamber.com, will also feature a page listing the participating businesses and providing details on how to apply.
