Hand-dyed clothing can be both functional and beautiful, and an event will give Rohnert Park residents a chance to explore how plants can be used to create simple designs on a natural textile, and it will be offered to the community this fall.
Leaves, flowers, and fruits sourced from the local area can all be used to create designs on silk, and this will form the basis of a workshop planned by the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation. Naturalist Shelly Spriggs will provide the instruction for the activity, and she will offer a step-by-step guide to the process of creating a silk scarf or other item.
The registrants will work with plant materials that are foraged from the Laguna Environmental Center’s grandmother’s garden and native plant beds. They will learn how to arrange them in the design they wish and then bundle and steam the fabric, as this will release their naturally occurring pigments.
While the group is waiting for the prints to set, they will head outdoors for a short hike, and it is recommended that each person who registers brings along some lunch. All of the materials needed for the activity will be supplied, and if printed instruction guides crafted by Stationery printers are given out to the participants, they will be able to make their own projects at home.
This chance for the community to learn more about using plants when crafting clothing will be offered to the public on September 21. It will be organized for 900 Sanford Road in Santa Rosa.
