Genre-melding jazz singer touches down in Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park’s Green Music Center is hosting a performance by the jazz vocalist Lucía this October.

The 24-year-old was the first Mexican artist to win the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, a contest whose namesake Lucía cites as her favorite singer.

In her debut self-titled album, Lucía has infused elements of both Latin and pop into her singing, covering everything from jazz standards like “What a Difference a Day Makes” to Spanish numbers like “La Llorna,” and songs by pop artists like Taylor Swift.

Born Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso, the artist already has her soon-to-be-released second album completed, which will feature a cover of “Lamento Jarocho” by the Mexican singer-songwriter Agustín Lara.

Her version of the song is part of a slate of new material she is bringing on the road, homage to the music she listened to growing up in the port of Veracruz. As a child, Lucía performed in her family’s Jarocho band, becoming familiar and influenced early on with the artist Toña la Negra.

Jazz performances like this may choose to use flyer printing to create music sheets and low-cost promotion in the community.

Lucía is performing on October 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Weill Hall Loft at the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University at 1801 E Cotati Ave in Rohnert Park.
