RP city council updates building codes

The November meeting for Rohnert Park’s city council had both its election day and its November election on the same day this year in a relatively short meeting that addressed a few issues on the council’s agenda.

The only item that required a vote from the council was with regard to construction and building codes that needed to be updated. This particular item also required a public hearing and a staff report was submitted from the Fire Marshal and the Development Services Director. In California, building codes are updated and amended every three years. The latest updates will start to be implemented at the start of 2023.

Another item that was addressed pertained to installing GPS systems on cars operated by the Department of Public Safety so that all of the department’s vehicles can be tracked in real-time. This recommendation was made to the council by a report from the Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury in June. Reports tend to be submitted on documents that feature official Letterheads.

Chief Tom Mattos was tasked with taking a look at the report and advising the council on whether this action would be feasible. Mattos looked at several GPS vendors and recommended One Step GPS for the project. The council was impressed to find out the project could move forward at the relatively low cost of $10,000 a year.
