Two more of Sonoma County’s cities are considering following other local communities' lead by prohibiting the development of new gas stations in the area.
These proposals are in line with cities' efforts to adopt climate change measures. The ultimate goal is to help the communities involved transition away from non-renewable energy sources. Gas stations with alternative energy services can use printing services to advertise to the public and make their efforts known.
Woody Hastings, along with his grassroots group known as the Coalition Opposing New Gas Stations (CONGAS), has been advocating for several years to stop cities from constructing new gas stations and blocking existing ones from increasing the number of pumps. Hastings and his organization have organized protests and campaigns to oppose gas station development in Sonoma County.
Currently, there are approximately 140 gas stations in Sonoma County. Some cities in the area, including Petaluma, Sebastopol, Cotati, and Rohnert Park, have already implemented prohibitions on new gas station construction. Santa Rosa and Windsor will be considering similar bans over the next month.
The Mayor of Windsor, Sam Salmon, is known for his frequent bike rides around the town, therefore it comes as no surprise that he is in favor of the prohibition on new gas stations.
People asked about the proposals responded to abc7news.com with a range of views, some of them echoing Hastings and Salmon, while others expressed concerns, such as that a gas station ban may drive up the price of fuel
