Quetzal is an innovate ensemble that cites influences as far ranging as Motown soul, punk, R&B, Chicano rock, and more. Based in Los Angeles, the band uses music as a means to fight oppression and encourage social change. They are described as being at the center of “son jarocho”, which is a style of folk music from Veracruz, Mexico.
Quetzal Flores founded the band with the idea of deliberately challenging Chicano music's boundaries, and has been wildly successful, with the band recognized as one of the city's most important ensembles. Their appearances feature a mixture of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Mexican music. Their passion for social justice, and women's rights in particular, have been inspired by grassroots movements throughout the world.
The band first started performing in Los Angeles's Little Tokyo area, at the Chicano-owned Troy Cafe, in 1993. At the 2012 Grammy Awards, the band took home the win for their album “Imaginaries” in the Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative category.
A review of Quetzal in performance says:
“Quetzal and Flor de Toloache were awesome!”
The Quetzal concert will be streamed from the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park on March 11 at 7:00 pm, as the venue is still closed. Organizers of events like this could work with flyer printing to create mailers for subscribers.
