The city leaders in Rohnert Park have agreed on a resolution that will see elections held on November 8.
The seats to be contested are for Districts 1, 2 and 5. The resolution would also like the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to merge the city’s November 8 election with the general elections being held state-wide.
Rohnert Park runs on an electoral system that is district-based. Under this system, voters are able to elect a single councilmember for every district. This will be the first time the voters from Districts 2 and 5 will be electing City Council members who will serve for terms lasting four years. District 1’s elected councilmember will only serve a term lasting two years. Flyer printing is a common feature during election campaigns.
Anyone registered as a voter in one of the three districts can run for election to the City Council. Nomination petitions can be picked up from the Office of the City Clerk and the deadline for submissions is August 12. The deadline will extend to August 17th if District 1’s incumbent has not filed nomination papers by August 12.
This is the first time that voters will be selecting council members for Districts 2 and 5, which means no incumbents are currently holding those seats, and that the nomination period for these two districts cannot be extended.
