Council meeting welcomes new officials and discusses floods

The Rohnert Park council’s first meeting of the year led with new appointments and taking a look at flood mitigation policies.

The council's first task was to supervise Chief Tim Mattos's swearing-in of a number of new public safety personnel. Eight newly appointed officers in all were sworn in.

Chief Mattos commented:

“[The badge pinning] is a significant moment in a law enforcement officer's career. It comes when you get hired, and it comes when you get promoted into a new rank and those don’t come along all the time.”

Also, a report on the several recent flooding incidents in Rohnert Park was provided by the city's directors of public safety and public works. They talked about the city's existing processes for handling storms and made suggestions including hiring a specialist consultant to help with drainage all over the city.

Preparation is key to current mitigation efforts, including making sure the community has a sufficient number of sandbags, warning residents to turn away from dangerously flooded places, and clearing debris such as leaves from areas that are susceptible to flooding to keep any drain systems clear. Poster printing can be used to share flood warnings and advice with the public.

However, the study emphasized that, particularly in areas where floods are likely to occur owing to streams backing up with runoff, there are occasions when the city’s ability to avoid flooding is limited.
