Classical concert scheduled in Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park residents and visitors have four chances to hear an intriguing concert of classical music, including a rehearsal if they choose.

Francesco Lecce-Chong will be on the podium conducting the Santa Rosa Symphony in the “Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes” by Mieczyslaw Weinberg; the “Piano Concert No. 2” by Prokofiev; and Hector Berlioz's “Symphonie Fantastique.”

Weinberg's work comprises different folk songs that come from Moldavia, a historic region that today includes the republic of Moldova, as well as parts that now fall within the neighboring countries of Romania and Ukraine. Most of the rhapsody's melodies were drawn from the country's majority population segment, but the final section is a dance in the Jewish klezmer tradition.

Prokofiev wrote his second symphony in 1912-1913, and was the pianist at its premiere. It is noted for the difficulty of its second movement, which is played at an extremely quick tempo.

The “Symphonie Fantastique” by Berlioz is a work that will probably be familiar to many audience members, as it is performed frequently. It is sometimes described as a “fever dream,” and depicts the misery of a composer who has poisoned himself with opium over an unrequited love.

The concerts are scheduled for October 3 at 7:30 pm, October 4 at 3:00 pm, and October 5 at 7:30 pm. The Discovery Rehearsal, which is a working rehearsal, is at 2:00 pm on October 3. Brochure printing can provide programs for this type of event.
