Beautiful voices set Rohnert Park alight

The Sonoma Bach Choir is getting ready for its latest concert.

Voice and Pipes: Tongues of Fire is a choral journey through the rich compositional history of one of Martin Luther’s most famous songs.

The Rohnert Park-area concert is based on Martin Luther’s ‘Komm Heliger Geist’. The song was first written as translation of the Latin antiphon Veni Sancte Spiritus, an older text used by Catholics during the season of Pentecost. Luther added two stanzas to the arrangement and set it to the German tune ‘Ebersberg’. It was picked up by two different printing companies in 1524 and has remained in Print under several different tunes and compositions. It retains its original form in the current printing of the Lutheran songbook.

The performance itself is being set up as variations on a theme. The 50-member choir will begin with the original arrangement and then wind through several different melodies for the song composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. In between the different settings, cantatas, motets, and organ preludes will also be performed, expanding on the more general theme of the power of spirit to inspire people to action.

It will be performed next Friday, May 20 at 8:00 pm at Schroeder Hall, located at 1801 E. Cotati Park. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for students. Anyone who is interested in attending should check the website for more information.
