Pleasanton's Urban Farmers prepare for harvest

Pleasanton is a thoroughly urban Bay Area suburb, but would-be farmers and gardeners there don't have to worry. The Urban Farmers is a local group that has been promoting local agriculture in the east Bay Area, and is approaching its spring harvest to benefit those in need.

The Urban Farmers' harvest takes place on May 12. Volunteers will travel around the area harvesting locally-grown food and vegetables. The collected food will be donated to local soup kitchens and food banks.

Attendees are advised to come prepared for a day of work, which includes packing water, gardening gloves, appropriate footwear and protection from the sun. The Urban Farmer's stated goal is not just to help out those in immediate need, but to demonstrate a different means of producing and distributing food that could feed the hungry at less expense.

The Farmers are part of a growing movement towards urban agriculture and gardening. Growing fruits and vegetables in small plots not only helps city-dwellers reconnect to nature, it can also be part of imagining an alternative to the environmental problems presented by mass agriculture.

Groups promoting this practice often advertise through both social media and Print methods like poster printing and flyer printing. With more and more people concerned about where their food comes from, groups like The Urban Farmers have a major opportunity to make a difference.
