Pleasanton group to highlight examples of good character

The Pleasanton Community of Character Collaborative is holding its annual luncheon event this spring.

The Awards Luncheon honors recipients of this year’s scholarships and Juanita Haugen Awards. Three high school seniors receive $1000 scholarships each year. Recipients are selected based on their civic engagement and demonstration of good character during high school. Awards go to individuals and organizations that have been exceptional character role models for the community.

Tickets are available online now for $45 per person. Attendees can also make an additional online donation to support the Community of Character scholarship fund when purchasing their tickets. The ticket price includes lunch and other refreshments. Lunch will include salad, bread, quiche, a chicken dish and dessert.

These awards are given in honor of Juanita Haugen, an advocate for public schools and the longest serving member in Pleasanton School Board’s history, who died in 2007. Haugen was a strong believer in character education in schools. The Community of Character Collaborative supports the development of six traits, which are honesty, compassion, respect, responsibility, self-discipline and integrity. These words are often displayed on Banners over Main Street and at the entrance to public buildings. Towns often use banner printing services to create these memorial Signs.

The Community of Character Awards Luncheon will be on Wednesday, May 13, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, at Veterans Hall in Pleasanton.
