The 156th Annual Scottish Highland Gathering and Games will take place in Pleasanton this September.
The fair will include a variety of Scottish cultural activities, including Highland dancing, live music, athletic competitions, and whisky tasting. This year’s festival will include the men’s professional Scottish Highland Games Heavy Events World Championships, as well as a new women’s elite class of competition. These heavy athletics include hammer throwing, stone putting, and sheaf tossing events.
Attendees will be able to purchase food, drinks, and traditional Scottish items like kilts and jewelry from a variety of participating vendors. Musical performances will include piping and drumming competitions, and a Massed Bands event in which all the competing bands perform together. Other events include a birds of prey exhibition and a one-mile race open to any runner wearing a kilt. Living history interpreters will present throughout the weekend, demonstrating skills ranging from sword fighting to silk painting. Historical organizations often use brochure printing services to share information.
Those planning to attend should purchase tickets in advance on the festival website. Adult tickets cost $30 for one day and $45 for both days. Discounted tickets are available for children and seniors.
The Scottish Highland Gathering will take place at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Labor Day weekend – Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4.
