The Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF) will offer swimming lessons in Palm Desert during the Amputee Coalition National Conference.
First Swim is a program where amputees can improve their comfort and skill in the water. The organizers will be offering a beginners’, intermediate, and advanced course for participants. The classes will cover several topics, including how to transfer from the water at the poolside, swim strokes, and general water safety skills. Participants can also meet other people with limb loss or limb differences during the sessions.
The OPAF is an organization that empowers amputees by offering recreational clinics to support them through physical challenges. The non-profit group was founded in 1995 by the Orthotic and Prosthetic National Office. Several workshops are offered by the organization for activities such as dancing, golfing, tennis, and climbing. The OPAF also offers educational programs for physical and occupational therapists that teach them how to properly accommodate those who have lost limbs.
The beginners’ swimming lesson will be held on Thursday, August 11. The intermediate course will follow on Friday, August 12, and the advanced class will take place on Saturday, August 13. Each clinic is free to join and will be held at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. Instructors for swimming lessons like this may use Print shops to make ads for their classes.
