Palm Desert hosts unique art workshop

A workshop focused on a unique art form known as cyanotype printing is coming to Palm Desert this spring at the Artists Center at the Galen.

The workshop is hosted by Rose Cefalu, who for a nominal fee, offers the course with all materials included.

The event, organized by the Artists Council, focuses on a form of art that uses the sun and special materials to create images.

The cynotype process involves making prints from images and even found objects, such as feathers, dried plants or leaves and crystals. A brief lesson precedes coating watercolor paper with a solution that reacts to light. The paper is then left to dry while the objects or image negative is prepared. Once everything’s in place, the paper and image negative or object are all taken out into the sun for the next step.

After the paper is exposed, it must be brought back inside, rinsed off and dried. The resulting image is captured in a way that is akin to photography, except it is monochromatic, can resemble a stencil and may involve casting the image in a single color, with tonal differences creating the image.

Art workshops like these may choose to use Stationery printing for use in making templates, printing off designs or other materials.

Cyanotype Printing with Rose Cefalu is happening on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Artists Center at the Galen in Palm Desert at 72567 Hwy 11. Tickets are available online.
