Montebello festival celebrates Nicaragua

An upcoming event will bring the music, food, dance, and culture of Nicaragua to Montebello.

The Festival Nicaraguense features activities that will encourage people to learn about Nicaraguan culture through the Central American country’s traditional food, as well as traditional folk dances and music. The entertainment will include a performance by outstanding artists Carlos Mejia Godoy, and La Cuneta Son Machín.

Godoy is a singer/songwriter and composer and one of the proponents of the “new song” tradition in Nicaragua. This music tackles socially important issues and is inspired largely by folk music. It hopes to inspire social good and change and is often associated with progressive causes.

La Cuneta Son Machín formed when its members joined the Santo Domingo Festival Parade held in Nicaragua’s capital Managua in 2009. The group takes its name from “La Cuneta,” which translates as “the sidewalk,” and “Son Machín,” the Spanish version of “sound machine” in English. The free annual concert to celebrates its founding.

The Festival Nicaraguense is set for Sunday, May 24 at Montebello’s popular Quiet Cannon. It is designed to be family friendly and presents a great opportunity for young people especially to learn about a different culture. Tickets are available via online platforms like Ticketón and Eventbrite. Since a large crowd is expected, organizers advise people to purchase tickets early. Events like this encourage attendance when organizers publicize them using poster printing.
