Héctor Elpidio Acosta Restituyo is normally called Héctor Acosta "El Torito" (Little Bull). He was voted into the Senate of the Dominican Republic in 2020 and elected again in 2024. However, it is not his political career that has drawn attention, but his music. Some critics have dubbed him the Dominican Republic’s best merengue singer.
He began singing as a child in the church choir, and went on to win a contest run by Radio Novel in 1982. He began his career as a member of the group La Renovación Quisqueyana, which was comprised of accompanists of the church choir and other musicians. He was with them for two years, then joined Los Gentiles, an experience that helped shape him.
In 1991, Acosta debuted with the Los Toros Band, gaining experience. He left the group in 2006 to start his solo career, and released his first album as a solo artist, “Sigo Siendo Yo (I Continue Being Me)” that same year. The effort was mostly merengue songs, but two bachata singles were highly successful, leading him to pursue bachata as well, for which he has also become known. A review says:
“El Torito came out full of energy . . . He is an [sic] star.”
Acosta will be at the Lit LA Nightclub on November 26. When they want to publicize events like this, organizers can use poster printing.
