A youth edition of the Broadway classic Bye Bye Birdie is coming to Monrovia’s Clifton Middle School this April.
The play features an all-student cast, in collaboration with Centre Stage Inc., with tickets set at $15.
Debuting in New York City in 1960, Bye Bye Birdie took a comical, music-filled retrospective of youth culture from the decade preceding it. Skewering 1950s small-town America, while at the same time paying loving homage to it, the play focuses on everything from the rise of rock and roll music to teen rebelliousness.
The plot revolves around the titular Conrad Birdie, a swoon-worthy teen who is drafted the army, and his romance with Kim MacAfee. With high-tempo tunes like “Got a Lot of Living To Do,” “Kids,” and “Put on a Happy Face,” the musical hits upon themes of generational distance and questioning the American ideal of the family unit. It was made into a film in 1963 starring Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leight, and was nominated for a number of awards that year.
Musicals like this may choose to use banner printing for vendor Signs, marquees, and stagecraft.
Bye Bye Birdie: Youth Edition is performing on April 9 to 10 at 6:00 pm, and on April 11 at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm, at the Clifton Middle School Auditorium at 226 South Ivy in Monrovia.
