UC Merced offers free programming seminars

Those looking to understand the nuts and bolts of their computers a bit more may be interested in a series of free seminars on the programming language Python, hosted by the University of California Merced's Engineering Service Learning program.

The classes will introduce students to Python, a popular programming language used by such high-tech entities as Wikipedia, Google, NASA, and CERN. Python can be used for tasks ranging from video game programming to graphic design, and hence could be of interest to everyone from dedicated tech geeks to professionals.

The seminar runs for three classes from October 26 to November 9, all on the UC Merced campus. The first class will introduce the basics of Python, while the second will tackle more advanced applications. The class will culminate with ‘Junkyard Wars’, a special competitive challenge. Spaces will be reserved only for those who have registered in advance for all classes.

Engineering Service Learning is a program to make technological and engineering education more accessible to the public, increasing Merced's tech literacy. Other seminars put on by this program deal with subjects ranging from software like Matlab or Excel to physical skills like soldering to career-advancing subjects like job interviews and what to put on your résumé and Business Cards. The Python seminar is also sponsored by Japanese tech company Topcon.
