Unique bike ride comes to Merced

Downtown Merced is hosting its Holiday Night Ride this December.

Participants in this Merced Bicycle Coalition-sponsored event are encouraged to decorate their bikes ahead of time with Christmas lights and holiday ornaments.

The family-free event includes a ride around downtown Merced to soak in the lights and other decorations adorning the city, though the ride is not recommended for smaller children with training wheels. However, there are alternatives for bringing the little ones along, including bike seats, trailers or tag-a-longs.

Bike-related giveaways and a post-ride discussion beneath the Christmas tree in Bob Hart Square will also be part of the festivities.

For the second year in a row, a bike decorating contest will also be part of the celebrations.

The ride starts and ends at Bob Hart Square. At the beginning of the gathering, members of the Merced Bike Coalition will select the top six best decorated bikes and hand the participants cards. At the end of the event, the final winner will be chosen by popular vote via whoever gets the loudest cheer. A free Kevin’s Bikes tune-up and one-year membership to MBC is in store for the winner.

Bicycling events like this may choose to use poster printing to create Signs guiding riders on the correct route.

The Holiday Night Ride is happening on December 6 at 5 p.m. at Bob Hart Square at 1628 Canal St in Merced.
