Merced panel focuses on challenges of small-town business

A discussion of the challenges of managing a business as a woman in a small town will be taking place next weekend in Merced, California.

The panel discussion has the self-explanatory title of ‘Small Town Women Who Started from the Bottom and Grew Their Career’, and features women who talk of doing just that. It argues that women from small towns and cities are at a disadvantage when it comes to starting or getting ahead in business, and offers advice as to how to overcome this obstacle.

The panel will feature five women from various industries: Sonia Gonzalez, the founder of Bay Area start-ups CrossChannel and Wolk; Janna Rodriguez, a restaurant owner and Mechanical Engineer at Intel; Marietta Huizenga, a counselor and life coach; Alice Contreras, a veteran CPA-certified accountant; and Araceli Gomez, a real estate investor. It will be chaired by fitness business owners Cristy Abarca and Rocio Gonzalez.

In addition to the panel, the event offers a social which may provide the opportunity for networking, something that both women and people from smaller cities may have a hard time breaking into. Attendees may wish to arrive with Business Cards and résumés in hand.

Working outside an urban core can present difficulties, but smaller cities increasingly have many of the same resources as their larger brethren, such as fully-equipped Print services and office suppliers. In addition to the panel and social, a ticket includes dinner and a "swag bag."

The event will take place on the evening of this Saturday, August 11 at Strings Italian Cafe.
