For kids playing football at the Pop Warner or middle school level, the dream of college football may still seem a long way off, but Merced College is offering them the opportunity to see just what it looks like this summer.
The school's football program is offering a skills camp for children aged 8 to 14. The ‘College for Kids’ program, which runs throughout the summer, will feature a variety of drills designed to help kids' passing, running, and other essential skills in a collegiate environment.
Registration for the program can be completed through Merced College Community Services or via Eventbrite. The camp is organized by Bob Casey, the head coach of the Merced Bluedevils, and Mike Chavez, the president of Bluedevil Youth Football. This past fall, Casey guided the Bluedevils to a 9-2 record in the California Community College Athletic Association.
With many former Bluedevils moving on to more well-known programs and a few to NFL rosters, such teams are enmeshed in their local communities and can provide a boost to the economy, whether it be using local Print shops for ticket and banner printing or hitting up the neighborhood diner for a heavy after-game meal.
The skills camp will take place on Saturday, July 7, running from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, with a cost of $10 plus a $1.42 booking fee via Eventbrite.
