After school youth center to fill former Merced fire station

Merced City Council unanimously approved what the public has long been calling for - a plan to expand activities for the city’s youngsters.

The council okayed a lease agreement with the Restorative Justice League, a local nonprofit, to occupy a long-unused fire station for the purpose of creating an after-school youth center at K and 27th streets. An assortment of repairs and upgrades have been done to renovate the former fire station.

Similar youth centers to the one the Restorative Justice League will open already exist in Merced’s south region; however, Mayor Mike Murphy explained that the new youth center will fill a central Merced need.

Flyer printing services are often instrumental in making the public aware of services provided by nonprofits.

According to Andre Griggs, founder and CEO of the Restorative Justice League, the youth center, in conjunction with Hmong Culture Camp and the Smiley Riley Legacy, will provide clients with strong emotional and social learning tools, relationship skills, and self-management. Among the center’s planned programing will be a schedule of college prep, homework support, photography, culinary arts, sports, and Zumba.

A soft opening is tentatively planned for mid-October and parents will be relieved to know that coronavirus precautions will be taken, such as the wearing of masks, including some online components and practicing social distancing.
