The Lindsay Wildlife Museum has teamed up with a group of students at Saint Mary’s College to educate the public about wildlife in the Lafayette area.
An app called ‘LMW Encounters’ enables individuals to identify and learn more about wildlife as they encounter it. The free mobile app downloads on iTunes and includes a ‘My First Note’ function that allows the owner to document and share their encounters on Facebook.
The project, ordered by the museum, provided an excellent learning experience for the students and not just in the subject of computer science. While classroom projects are based on what is doable, working with a client proved to be more challenging. Clients know what they want but are often unaware of the feasibility of what they want.
Other real world lessons the team learned included how to deal with absolute deadlines and balancing the expectations of the client with the sensibilities of the user. Keeping an eye on the complexity of the coding so that the museum staff could update the app on their own in the future was also a consideration.
Museums have a variety of uses for brochure printers and introducing and explaining this new app will present another situation in which Brochures will no doubt be useful. The new app may even initiate a new round of postcard printing from pictures the museum patrons have taken on their phone and identified with the help of the LWM Encounters app. Get a Free Quote for Brochures
