Public library gets a head of STEAM

As part of the Contra Costa Library System, the Lafayette Public Library will be participating in a Summer Reading Festival.

People of all ages and all types of readers can participate in the Summer Reading Festival. The theme for this Festival is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM), which is related to the Year of STEAM on which the library is focusing. The reading list is comprised of booklists for kids, tweens, teens, and adults on topics associated with STEAM.

Those who participate in the Festival can keep track of their progress either online or by keeping a paper record that was created by a printing company and that can be picked up at the library. Each person earns one point for every minute that they read and additional points can be earned by completing library and various summertime activities and participating in STEAM challenges. Each week has a different STEAM challenge and is announced on Monday.

Teenagers, and kids who earn 1,000 points receive a completion prize at the end of the festival on July 30. They can then be entered into a drawing for additional prizes.

Babies can also participate in the program with an adult reading to them at least 10 minutes a day. Babies who earn 200 points also receive a completion prize.
