Lafayette School among ribbon winners

Almost three dozen California schools were recognized recently as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education, and one Lafayette school was on the list.

On September 29, 285 public schools, along with 50 private ones, were named as National Blue Ribbon Schools, and 11 Bay Area ones were included in that number, with Happy Valley Elementary School here in Lafayette being one of them. With the exception of an Oakland school, the Bay Area schools were, like Lafayette, located in suburban communities.

Each school on the list received a large banner it can hang to announce its status as a Blue Ribbon School. Good schools are a calling card for suburban municipalities and, in addition to the banner, the Blue Ribbon official logo will likely appear on the schools’ Letterheads as well as its Promotional Products like pencils and Calendars. Schools are encouraged to boast of their Blue Ribbon status, but are required to include the year their award(s) were presented.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a way for the Department of Education to acknowledge outstanding public and nonprofit schools. Schools are chosen for the award based on graduation rates and student test scores, including subgroups scores.

According to its website, the program seeks to honor academic and the closing of achievement gaps among subgroups of students.
