Lafayette may follow Walnut Creek with bag ban

Following a state trend, Walnut Creek shoppers will no longer be offered plastic grocery store Bags and, should they not bring their own reusable bags, they will have to purchase paper bags for 10¢ each. Lafayette may follow suit before the end of the year.

Walnut Creek is the latest out of more than 100 jurisdictions in California to ban plastic grocery bags. The ban, like those throughout the state, has been enacted to reduce litter. According to an assessment done by Walnut Creek in 2010, the most common items discarded in the city's waterways were plastic bags.

Lafayette is on the same path; in 2011, the city set out to implement environmental strategies that included putting together an Environmental Task Force. The body recommended the banning of single-use plastic bags by City Council for a variety of reasons.

Lafayette City Council is received an update on September 22, along with a summary of SB270, the proposed state legislation dealing with plastic bags dispensed by retailers. On October 14, the city's Environmental Task Force is to deliver its list of options to the council. Lafayette may then pass its own regulations before 2014 is over.
