Lafayette drivers need to be aware that Contra Costa County law enforcement will not be waiting until Labor Day to intensify their holiday crackdown on impaired drivers.
A DUE/Driver’s license checkpoint was set up in Lafayette on August 22 and the local crackdown, which is part of a nationwide effort, will run through September 1.
The lead up to the three-day weekend has seen police officers seeking out those who are driving impaired. Several operations are planned for the county’s participation in the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. They include roving Saturation Patrols looking for DUIs, a multi-agency strike team, a sting operation targeting drivers whose driving privileges have been revoked, and a probation and DUI warrant sweep.
On average, throughout the year, someone is killed in this country every 51 minutes due to drunk driving. The frequency increases to once every 34 minutes over Labor Day weekend. To avoid adding to this statistic, or face a hefty DUI fine, Lafayette residents are advised to use a designated driver or to avoid drinking if they are going to be traveling.
