Dog days of Lafayette will soon be here

They say every dog has its day, but here in Lafayette, all dogs get theirs at once during the annual ‘Dogtown Downtown’ celebration.

Now in its second year, Dogtown Downtown is being held at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center and will feature a number of canine-centric activities. Registration for canine contests start at 9:00 am and are followed at 10:00 am by a parade.

The police-escorted parade starts at Plaza Park and proceeds to the library. Residents familiar with the former Doggie Diner can once again see the eatery's three giant Dachshund heads on a Doggie Diner float hosted by John Law, an East Bay contractor.

Once at the library, the Contra Costa County's Sheriff Department will provide information and demonstrations regarding police dog activities. Additionally, dogs will be on hand for adoption from the Animal Rescue Foundation and County Animal Services. Meanwhile, young dog lovers will have the opportunity to help put together “goody Bags” of dog food donated for the event to be distributed to needy pet owners through the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

Dogtown Downtown takes place April 11 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Last year, around 400 dogs accompanied by about 800 humans attended the inaugural event. This year, the help of a flyer printing service could make those numbers even higher.
