The store is owned by Betty and Rudy Winnacker, who decided to pursue their bookstore dream despite the uncertain economic times.
The bare-bones shop quietly opened in September with little fanfare, with a few books and minimal shelving. Today, the shelves are in place and loaded with a wide array of books in a variety of categories. The owners say they are optimistic about the store’s future based on the interest from residents in their first few weeks of business.
Rudy Winnacker told The East Bay Times.
“The idea behind the store’s name is that it reflects ‘thoughtful,’ ‘intelligent,’ and ‘curious.’”
The books are about half fiction and half non-fiction. They also sell used books. The Winnackers say they will gladly order any book they do not have if requested.
The shop is more than 1,200 square feet, including an office and storage space. When a new business opens, one of the first items to purchase is Business Cards.
Reasonable Books is located at 3645 C Mt. Diablo Blvd in Lafayette near Trader Joe’s, in what used to be a Papyrus store. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
