The Governing Board of the Lafayette School District recently voted unanimously to place a Proposition 39 General Obligation Bond Measure on the ballot for its meeting on June 7.
Over the past 18 months, teachers, staff, and parents, along with an architectural team and consultants, have been assessing the five neighborhood schools and been compiling a list of the many issues in building infrastructure. The Bond Measure is looking for $70m in funding to renovate, repair, and modernize these schools, to upgrade each school so that its facilities match teaching and learning methods in the 21st Century as it looks to accommodate growth in enrollment and improve safety and security for students.
Three of the five schools date back to the 1940s and 1950s. According to Superintendent Rachel Zinn, there has been a great deal of wear and tear at all of the schools from decades of constant use.
The district receives no funding from the state for facilities, so the money to repay the bond would be from property taxes. The cost is expected to be no more than $30 per $100,000 of assessed value of taxable property.
To inform the community of the proposed work, HKIT Architects, which worked with the school personnel, may create Flyers with a list of the renovations and replacements of building systems that need to be carried out at each school.
