CHP Officer John Fransen responded to a report at 7:26 am of a women in labor. The delivery took place on state Highway 24 in the proximity of Acalanes Road.
According to Officer Fransen, the expectant father pulled on to the shoulder when it became apparent that his child did not intend to wai until they arrived at the hospital. The father delivered his son before officers arrived, but if they had arrived in time the CHP officers could have rendered assistance, as part of their training includes delivering babies in an emergency.
Although an ambulance had been called, it was cancelled once the baby boy was delivered. The parents and their newborn son proceeded to Walnut Creek's John Muir Medical Center in the family car – an approximate five-minute drive away from where the baby was born.
With the CHP confirming the baby is “doing great”, Fransen said:
"It's definitely a miracle. Luckily, most people are able to get to the hospital, but sometimes, when the child wants to enter into this world, they don't wait."
