A majority on Lafayette city council agree to back a downtown Walgreens Pharmacy in its pursuit of an alcohol license, despite objections from some stakeholders.
In order for Walgreen’s to obtain an ‘off-sale general’ alcohol license, a convenience or necessity for issuing statement is required from the city by California. This is due to the concentration of these licenses in the store’s census tract
Three members of council agreed to dispatch such a letter to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverages Control, confirming that providing Walgreens with an alcohol license would be of public convenience.
Two members of council declined to lend their support, saying they saw no need to increase the concentration of licenses in the area. Some residents have voiced their opposition as well, citing worries over increasing the incidence of underage drinking.
Recommendation for issuing the finding of convenience noted that alcohol sales at the new store would not be within 500 feet of a school. Moreover, it would, until Town Center Phase III development is complete, be over 150 feet from any residence and only 5% of its 9,956 square feet will be usable for alcohol sales.
The new Walgreen's will be across the street from Diablo Foods. The opening of a new store is always a festive occasion, made more so when a banner printing service is employed to announce it ahead of time.
