After a successful inaugural event in 2019, Escondido will once again honor war veterans at the second annual Escondido VetFest.
The festival honors and celebrates those who have fought for American freedom in wars past and present, and features a parade along Grand Avenue, followed by a festival with an official ceremony.
The first Escondido VetFest was held in 2019, after Mayor Paul McNamara – who is himself a retired Marine Corps colonel – teamed up with American Legion JB Clark Post 149 and friend Nina Deerfield to create the special day. McNamara thought Escondido had gone too long without officially recognizing its veterans.
The festival is going into its second year with the help of community volunteers and sponsors, and is under the organization of the American Legion and The Brothers of 6, a local organization dedicated to preserving local history.
The day also includes a storefront contest, where businesses along the Grand Avenue parade route are encouraged to decorate their buildings in star-spangled patriotic creativity. The Escondido Art Association won first place in last year’s contest.
Events such as Escondido VetFest can use banner printing services in parades and its sponsor packages.
The Escondido American Legion, together with sponsors, works to help local children with scholarships and helps veterans and their families.
Escondido VetFest is scheduled to take place on Veterans Day, Wednesday November 11.
