Hikers and lovers of history and biodiversity will want to visit Historic Daley Ranch this summer for its monthly open house.
Some of San Diego County's best hiking trails are located within Daley Ranch and can accommodate expert, intermediate and novice hikers. The 20 miles of trails can be used for mountain biking and horse-riding as well.
The City of Escondido bought the more than 3,000 acre ranch in 1996 as developers were moving to purchase the land, saving it forever as a habitat preserve. It was settled by English immigrant Robert Daley in 1869. The ranch-house was built in 1925 and is still open for visitors, and features the original cobblestone fireplace.
The ranch operated as a horse, cattle and dairy ranch and goods were transported to markets in San Diego. Now a historic landmark, visitors can participate in nature walks led by a park ranger or volunteer who will explain the history of the area and point out important natural ecological habitats.
Ranches, parks, and other green spaces can use Print shops to create maps that show hiking trails or other landmarks and public utilities.
Historic Daley Ranch's Open House takes place the second Sunday of the month from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, although realistically it may be the summer before the next one can be held. The ranch address is 3024 La Honda Drive in Escondido.
