Escondido hosts event for film fans

Fans of a movie that has become a cult favorite will have a chance soon to chat with its stars and watch the film again.

“Napoleon Dynamite” was released in 2004 and has since climbed to the No. 14 spot on Bravo’s list of the “100 Funniest Movies” ever made. The film is a wacky examination of the ups and downs that seem to define the teenage years.

Napoleon Dynamite, a nerdy 16-year-old, just wants to fit in with his high school classmates. He fends off bullies, befriends a transfer student from Mexico (Pedro) who wants to be class president, and gets enmeshed in a money-making scheme devised by his brother and his uncle. He bounces back, literally, by performing a stunning dance at a debate between Summer and Pedro for the class presidency.

The film is thought to have endured because people see themselves in the characters, and the problems they face, though exaggerated, have a ring of truth.

The upcoming event will give fans a chance to hear from Jon Heder (Napoleon), Jon Gries (Uncle Rico), and Efren Ramirez (Pedro). The actors will take part in a moderated discussion, answering questions about the project. Before the talk, however, the film will be shown in its entirely.

The popcorn-passing evening is set for June 10 at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Events like this are often advertised with colorful handouts, which organizers can develop using flyer printing.
