An upcoming concert in Escondido will celebrate the amazing catalog of works of two iconic American musicians.
George and Ira Gershwin have written some of the most memorable and popular music ever composed. Familiar songs include “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “But Not for Me,” and “Summertime.” The latter is from the opera “Porgy and Bess,” and is the single most-covered song in history.
The opera is the story of Porgy, a crippled beggar who lives on Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, and his love for Bess, who is battling demons of her own. It is unusual in that the work was written by a white man who specifically wrote it for and demanded it be performed by an all-African American cast.
Tickets for the event are available by the table only, and no food or beverages are permitted to be brought in from outside. In addition, the event is scheduled to be held outdoors, in one of the courtyards of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Guests should dress accordingly and be aware the concert could be moved inside if the weather becomes unsuitable.
The “’S Wonderful! ‘S Marvelous” concert (“’S Wonderful” is the title of a song George Gershwin wrote in 1927) will be performed on the consecutive nights of June 17 and June 18. When organizers plan concerts like this, they can use brochure printing to create audience programs.
