A concert of classical pieces is coming to Escondido.
Antonio Méndez will be making his debut with the San Diego Symphony as he conducts the upcoming performance. The works on the program are “Overture, Scherzo & Finale, Op. 52” by Robert Schumann, “Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra” by Ned Rorem, and the popular “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky, in an orchestration by Ravel.
Schumann wrote his Overture shortly after his marriage in 1841. It was not well received, so he rewrote it, and it was performed again in 1845, to acclaim.
Ned Rorem was an American composer of contemporary classical music. He composed his Concerto during the period 1991-1992, with the work commissioned by the New York Philharmonic. Thomas Stacy was the soloist at the first performance in 1994, and Rorem dedicated the concerto to Stacy. Andrea Overturf will be the soloist at this performance in Escondido.
The highlight of the performance will be “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The work is a tone poem in ten scenes, each one musically describing a different work of art by painter Viktor Hartmann. The exhibit was held at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1874. The most familiar melodies are probably the “Great Gate of Kiev” and the recurring theme “Promenade.”
The concert will take place on Saturday, March 9 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Organizers of events like this will often work with brochure printers to create programs for audience members.
