World premiere of musical debuts in Tucson

Tucson’s Leo Rich Theater is debuting the musical Anita this April.

Making its worldwide premiere, Anita is a story that grapples with family separations, forming resilience, and finding the joys in life. Using a mixture of the R&B, pop, cumbia, and bolero musical styles, with musical direction by Quetzal Guerrero, the titular Anita is determined to reunite with her family in this hopeful tale.

When Anita and her parents are separated, she finds herself in a youth shelter, under the strict management of Miss Ghuardia. Using her wit and charm — and with plenty of music and mischief along the way — Anita Forms an alliance with an executive to assist in the search for her family.

The state show was co-created by musical mastermind Guerrero and Milta Ortiz, with direction by Chach Snook and choreography by Vanessa Corona. The local Borderlands Theater is behind the production of Anita. With nearly four decades in the Southwest, the theater has been operating by executive leadership steered by the community for the past 11 years.

Ticket prices for Anita range from $35 to $56 and can be purchased online. Musicals like this may choose to use printing services to make audience programs and showtime sheets.

Anita plays from April 2 to 19 at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm at the Leo Rich Theater at 260 S Church Ave in Tucson.
