Post-grunge hit-makers take to stage in Tucson

Tucson’s The Rialto is hosting a performance by Toadies this October.

The alternative rock band that came to prominence in the mid-1990s is hot off their eighth studio album, The Charmer.

Toadies took heavy influence from The Pixies, the band that is considered to be the progenitor of grunge.

In 1993, Toadies signed on to Interscope Records, with their single “Possum Kingdom” receiving heavy rotation on both MTV and alternative rock radio stations. It helped elevate the band’s debut album, Rubberneck, to eventually receive platinum status for selling more than 1 million records by the end of 1996.

The band went through various ups and downs since then, getting a refreshed lineup of musicians along the way, with Clark Vogeler joining as lead guitarist in 1996 and bassist Doni Blair signing on in 2008, right after a hiatus.

Frontman Vaden Todd Lewis said in a recent interview that the inspiration for Toadies’ latest album began during the 2020 pandemic. While social distancing at home, Lewis watched some of his favorite movies and shows, including “Evil Dead 2” and “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which would serve as inspiration for some of the songs, notably “Ash’s Theme.”
