South-side Tucson company plans economic improvements

Distressed commercial buildings in Tucson on the south and southwest sides of the city will be converted into restaurants and stores by The Common Group, a development company based in Tucson. The company also plans to create more small businesses in an overlooked part of the city.

The Common Group was founded in 2014 by Guillermo Gallegos and Jesus Bonillas Jr. along with their partners Ruben Cazares and Chris Itule, who all live on the south side of the city. They have already converted the Edmund Marquez Suzuki dealership into the Shoppes at Irvington, which can house ten businesses, with eight of them already leased.

The Common Group also recently finished the conversion of a Long John Silver’s restaurant into a Pollo Feliz, which is a Mexican fast-food restaurant. According to Bonillas, the project cost $750,000 and will become one of the best of these restaurants in the country.

Another future project is the small Ajo Plaza, which is the headquarters of the company.

According to Jonathan Rothschild, Mayor of Tucson, as those who have grown up in the south side, The Common Group has a unique perspective regarding the area that can help to make it more prosperous from an economic standpoint.
