A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson, marking the first Fisher House in Arizona.
Military families are able to reside in a Fisher House and be close to a family member during hospitalization for an illness, injury, or disease. The new facility will be 13,000 square feet in size, have 16 suites, and include common areas with a kitchen and larges spaces for families.
There will be no charge for family members of eligible military service members and veterans who are being treated at the VA Medical Center in Tucson, or indeed any other medical facility in the city.
According to the director of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Jonathan H. Gardner, this facility will be of great value not only for the community of Tucson, but also for the state of Arizona. He adds that it will be a complement to the healthcare services veterans and other military service members already receive.
The Fisher House is scheduled to open sometime in 2016 at a cost of $6m. Half of that is expected to be raised by individuals and businesses, and the other half matched by the Fisher House Foundation.
