Nominations for the Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Servant-Leadership Award for 2020 are currently being sought.
The call has been put out by the senior vice-president for cultural affairs and chair of the Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. committee, Colleen Jennings-Roggensack. “We are all connected” is the theme of this year’s award, and colleges often use printing services to make the need known throughout their campuses for such nominations.
The philosophy of servant-leadership is one that encourages those who first want to be of service, and then decide to lead in an effort to expand service to institutions and individuals. Formal leadership positions do not need to be held by servant-leaders, as trust, collaboration, the ethical use of power and empowerment, and listening are important aspects of servant-leadership.
Those who can be nominated for a student servant-leadership need to be enrolled full-time at ASU as either a graduate or undergraduate student, have a track record of commitment through volunteering, and exemplify the principles of servant-leadership. Résumés need to be included and two letters of recommendation with the nomination. Students can nominate themselves.
The winner of the award will receive a $1,500 scholarship that can be used to help defray educational costs. This award will be presented by the ASU MLK Jr. Committee on January 23, 2020 at the MLK Breakfast on the Polytechnic campus.
