There is a plan to add 17 acres to the city of Tempe so that a new mixed-use development project and other improvements can be carried out in the area. A portion of the north Tempe county island will be annexed. This land is north of East Gilbert Drive, west of North Miller Road, and south of East Curry Road.
Jennifer Adams, a member of the Tempe City Council, said that residents in the area have wanted to see improvements on the county island and now that work will be able to begin. Adams added that the location is ideal, being north of downtown Tempe and Tempe Town Lake and south of SkySong at Arizona State University. Donna Kennedy, Economic Development Director, said that this will provide many business and housing opportunities for the city.
In addition to infrastructure and road improvements in the area, Banyan North Tempe, a new retail and residential development with 650 residential units is being planned for the area. Todd & Associates working with Milhaus, a development firm, will be the architects designing the development. Such developments and their benefits are often highlighted for residents with flyer printing.
There are currently several dilapidated buildings on the island, and it is also covered with weeds, litter, and graffiti. Another issue is flooding. The city will now be able to correct these issues with the annexation of the island.
